Repetitive Strain Injury is a chronic pain syndrome that occurs after activities involving repetitious movement such as playing a racket sport or using a computer. The pain is in the arm and is caused by injury to muscles, tendons, nerves and other soft tissue. Repetitive Strain Injury can cause pain, stiffness, numbness, tingling, swelling in the upper extremity, and inflammation in joints. Wasting and weakening of the muscle may also be present.
The following conditions are examples of Repetitive Strain Injuries;
Treatment for Repetitive Strain Injury will initially focus on pain relief and rest of the affected area. This can be achieved by soft tissue massage, application of ice, heat, dry needling and gently articulations. It may be difficult for you to rest your injury due to work, sporting or domestic commitments. However repeated micro trauma to the tendons or muscles can lead to long term disability and pain. You may need to make adjustments to the tasks that you need to do.
Later on when your condition is less acute, muscle strengthening is also an important part of your treatment for Repetitive Strain Injury to prevent loss of function in the affected joint. This is generally achieved using a combination of muscle energy techniques, the use of Theraband or small hand weights and incorporating exercise into your daily regime such as swimming or yoga. Aerobic exercise is important for the healing of muscles, general fitness and self confidence.
