Osteopathy and Babies

childrenBaby Osteopathy is a very gentle and safe treatment for this age group. Specific, skilled and light pressure is used. A baby suffering can cause constant crying which may, in turn, cause much distress and tension within the family and can be exhausting.

There is much evidence to suggest that Osteopathy for babies can help to settle an infant by reducing crying and irritable behavior, improving sleep and reducing much stress amongst the family.

Osteopaths recognized that infantile problems may be related to a stressful birthing process. The journey down the birthing canal is a traumatic event for a baby, especially if intervention is required (forceps or Vacuum extraction). Babies being born by Caesarian section can also be prone to problems due to the sudden extraction from the uterus.

Birth can cause stresses and strains within the body’s musculoskeletal system and parents may subsequently bring their babies to see an Osteopath if they are unsettled, have infantile colic, recurrent upper respiratory tract infections, constipation, flat heads, heads rotated into one position or exaggerated molding on the head from the delivery. These are some examples of common problems in babies that Osteopaths treat.

Osteopathy and Children

Osteopathy and Children Asymmetry in the head, neck and body can create postural imbalances and discomfort in the musculoskeletal system. Children may complain of pain, have a scoliosis or gait abnormalities. This may lead to problems in adulthood and a predisposition to insidious injuries.
Hip, knee and foot disorders are conditions Osteopaths would treat in their clinics, especially in young athletes. Repetitive activities may lead to micro stresses in areas of the body that are vulnerable during their greatest developmental activity.

Accidents are common in children and injuries such as broken limbs, head injuries or joint sprains could lead to residual problems within the musculoskeletal system. Osteopaths are trained to palpate torsions and strains to the connective tissue of the body.

Osteopathy will facilitate the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Children usually respond very well to Osteopathic treatment.
