Carpal Tunnel Syndrome occurs when the median nerve is compressed as it passes through the carpal tunnel in the wrist. It can be an extremely painful condition and is common in women aged 30-50yrs.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome has many causes which include Repetitive Strain Injury, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Diabetes, Hypothyroidism and pregnancy.
Treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome with Osteopathy can be very beneficial for pain relief and reduction of the swelling in the hand. Carpal tunnel treatment focuses on releasing the ligaments, muscles and fluid that can be causing compression of the median nerve. Carpal tunnel treatment may also include work on the whole of the upper extremity, upper thoracic and cervical spine and the upper ribs. This will aid lymphatic and venous return and help release the nerve supply to the upper extremity.
It may also be helpful to wear a splint at night, stop or reduce doing any activities that bring on your symptoms, reduce your salt intake and Vit B supplements may help.
Sometimes surgery is required to release the compression of the median nerve but it is wise to try conservative treatment first.
It is important to rule out any metabolic or rheumatic diseases with your doctor. There are usually other signs and symptoms associated with systemic problems like these. You will be referred to your GP for further investigations if you present with any of these.
